HEARTH-SPECIFIC WALKTHROUGH

Install Kindlane on a Hearth display

This walkthrough follows the installation process tested on a Hearth display. You’ll use an Android phone and the Bugjaeger app to install Kindlane wirelessly. These steps are specific to Hearth; other Android displays may use a simpler installation method.

1

Open Hearth Advanced Settings

On your Hearth display, tap the Settings icon in the upper-right corner. Then select the small Advanced Settings button in the lower-left corner.

2

Enable Developer Options

In Advanced Settings, open About tablet. Tap Build number seven times to unlock Developer options, then open Developer options.

3

Enable wireless ADB

Under the Debugging section, open Wireless debugging and enable it. Make a note of the IP address and port displayed in the Hearth settings—you’ll need both to connect your phone.

4

Connect Bugjaeger from your phone

On your Android phone, install Bugjaeger from Google Play and open it. Enter the Hearth display’s IP address and port, then connect. Both devices must be able to communicate over your network.

5

Disable Native App

In Bugjaeger, scroll to the bottom of the app list and locate Native App. Disable it so the original Hearth interface does not launch in place of Kindlane. This changes the device’s default behavior.

6

Install Kindlane Wall

Download the Kindlane Wall APK to your phone. In Bugjaeger, tap the + button, find the APK in your phone’s Downloads folder, and install it on the Hearth display.

7

Launch Kindlane

Once installation finishes, look for Kindlane near the top of Bugjaeger’s app list. Tap the Play button to launch it on Hearth.

After installation: Turn off Wireless debugging in Hearth’s Developer options when you’re finished. If you want to return to the original Hearth interface later, you may need to re-enable Native App.

Common questions

Which APK should I download?

Choose Kindlane for Android for a phone or regular tablet. Choose the Wall build for a compatible wall-mounted Android display. The Wall build is portrait-oriented and has a different interface configuration.

Do I need Google Play?

No. Kindlane downloads as an APK from the official Kindlane release site. Android may ask you to permit installing from the browser or Files app.

Why do I see an installation warning?

Android shows extra warnings when an APK comes from outside Google Play. Only proceed when you've intentionally downloaded the file from Kindlane's official links. Do not disable device protection globally.

Will installing one version replace the other?

The current Android and Wall builds share the same application ID and signing identity; they are not independent side-by-side apps. Switching variants may replace the installed version. Confirm your household information has synchronized first.

Will my existing information stay?

Compatible signed updates typically retain app data, but never rely on this alone. Confirm successful household sync before updating or switching devices, and avoid uploading an empty device over existing data.

Can I use it on an iPhone or iPad?

Yes. Open the Kindlane web app in Safari, choose Sign in with Google and create or join your household. You can start using only an iPhone and computer. See the web guide for Home Screen access. APK downloads below are for Android devices.

Where do I configure family syncing?

Use the household guide to create or join your family. The older manual Firebase walkthrough is still linked there for existing families.
