How do I create or join a household?

On iPhone or computer, open Kindlane and choose Sign in with Google. Your first sign-in creates your account. New families enter a household name and choose Create household; invited family members enter their code and choose Join with a code. Returning members sign in with their usual Google account. No Android device or Firebase setup is required. Get Started with browser signup.

On Android, complete the welcome tour and choose Continue to Google, or open Settings → Sync across devices on an existing installation. Follow the household guide. Families using an older custom project can still use the legacy Firebase setup guide.

What if I cancel Google sign-in or choose the wrong account?

In the web app, try Sign in with Google again. If the wrong account is already signed in, use Home → Settings → Sign out on iPhone, or Preferences → Sign out on desktop, then choose the correct Google account. On Android, retry under Settings → Sync across devices. Canceling sign-in does not create a household. See the household setup guide.

If a code expired, request another from the owner. Keep your existing household when troubleshooting sign-in.

How do I preserve an older family login while moving to a household?

Existing shared-family accounts can still use Settings → Sync across devices → Using an older family login?. Keep that login and all devices intact until the owner signs in with their own Google account, creates the household, and uses Move my data on the device with the correct shared information. Verify your family data and second-device syncing before switching or removing anything. Do not uninstall or erase app storage to troubleshoot. The legacy Firebase guide remains available for existing installations.

How do invites and kid permissions work?

In the web app, open Home → Settings → Household members on iPhone, or Household members in the desktop sidebar. The owner creates an Adult or Child invitation and shares its 8-character code privately. Each code works once and expires after 24 hours. The recipient signs in with their own Google account and chooses Join with a code. On Android, the equivalent choices are Invite a grown up and Invite a kid under Members.

After a child joins, the owner assigns their Daily list and reviews Permissions. Child controls limit available actions; shared household calendars and lists remain visible to household members.

My child doesn't have a Google account. Can I use a made-up email address?

The web app uses Google sign-in, including for children. Supported Android/Wall devices can sign a child in with an existing Firebase email-and-password account instead of Google, but typing a made-up address here does not create an account. The email-and-password user must first be created by someone authorized to manage Firebase Authentication for the project's household sign-in. An administrator may use a unique address as a login identifier, even if it has no inbox, but a fictional address cannot receive password-reset or verification messages. A working parent-controlled email address or unique alias is safer. On the child's device, choose No Google on this device? Sign in with email, sign in with the pre-created account, and then use the parent's Invite a kid code to join the household. Set the child's Daily list and Permissions on the owner's device. Never sign the child into the owner's account: their role and permissions follow the signed-in user. If you cannot create a separate email/password account for the active household, this is not currently a self-service sign-up path. Read the child account setup note.

What happens to the meal plan on Monday?

Kindlane advances the meal plan automatically each Monday. The finished week goes to Past weeks and the next planned week becomes This week, while later plans are kept. On a phone, tap the week heading to choose Past weeks; on tablets, use the week navigation. Week templates and Start a new week remain in the week actions menu. Starting a new week early changes household data, so do not use it just to test the feature.

How do I plan meals for more than one week?

In the web app, open Meals (Meal planner on desktop), choose a week and pick meals for its slots. Use Saved meals to add meals and dishes.

On Android, open Meals and choose This week. On an Android phone, tap the week heading and choose Plan ahead to create the next saved week, or choose an existing planned or past week. You can swipe between already-planned weeks. Tap an empty meal row to pick a meal. Auto-plan fills unlocked dinners in This week when Dinner is shown; Week templates, Start a new week and Delete this week are in the week actions menu as applicable. On a wide landscape tablet, multiple weeks can appear together; swipe or use week arrows to move ahead. Changes sync to your household when connected.

Where did the Calendar controls go on a tablet?

On an Android tablet, at the top of Calendar choose Agenda, Week or Month. The plus button creates an event, and the menu contains Refresh, Manage calendars and Countdowns. The Month view takes up more space on a landscape tablet, with events for the selected day below the calendar.

How can I move a grocery item to the right aisle?

Open Grocery and use the item's aisle or move control to choose a different section. This reorganizes the shared list without editing the ingredient on a saved dish.

Can I give or take away points on the Daily list?

On an Android grown-up device, open the Daily list Today card and choose Give bonus or Take away. Enter the Settings PIN, select the person, amount and reason. Recent shows the change and provides Undo. The old separate Out of bed button has been removed. These controls are hidden on a kid's own device.

How do I change Kindlane's appearance?

On iPhone, open Home → Settings. On a computer, choose Preferences in the sidebar. Choose Classic, Modern, Matte, Coral Home, Atmosphere or Opal; Light or Dark; an accent color; and Standard or Larger text. You can also arrange or hide Home cards, choose phone bottom-bar sections, select Home Daily lists and change calendar/weather preferences. Light is the default, and your choices are saved for you in this browser.

On Android, open Settings → This device → Appearance & colors. The public website's color picker changes only this website.

Can I replay the welcome tour or see what's new?

In the Android app, open Settings, then Help & Support. Use Replay the tour or What's new; Features and tips has quick demonstrations and options to show or hide tab tips. These are in the app, not an interactive tour on this website.

How do I ask someone to do something with Pass the Baton?

On Home, open Pass the Baton and tap Ask. Choose a member, describe the request and optionally add a time. The recipient can tap Seen it, Accept or Decline, and Mark done. Acceptance can be undone, and the sender can cancel. Requests require household syncing and are intended to be visible only to the sender and recipient.

How do Pass the Baton notifications work?

In the Android app, open Settings, This device, then Pass the Baton notifications. Alerts are off until you turn them on. Android notification permission and battery restrictions can affect delivery, so test alerts between real household devices before depending on them.

Can I use Kindlane on an iPhone or computer?

Yes. Open Kindlane in Safari on iPhone or in your computer browser. Sign in with Google to create your account, create a household or join with an invite. You can set up Daily lists, rewards, meals, groceries and calendar events without an Android device. On iPhone, Safari's Share menu offers Add to Home Screen. Read the iPhone and Computer guide or Get Started.

Which Kindlane APK should I use?

Choose the Android APK for phones and standard tablets. Choose the Wall APK for a compatible portrait wall display. For Hearth hardware, follow the Hearth installation instructions.

Android says the APK cannot be installed. What should I try?

Confirm Android is version 8.0 or newer, use the correct APK, and check whether the browser or Files app has permission to install from that source. Some managed devices or smart displays restrict external app installation. See the installation guide.

Do I need to enter an email to download?

No. The public download page does not currently require an email address or account. Open Downloads and choose the APK for your device.

Why is my second device not showing the same household?

On the web, sign in with the Google account already linked to your household. A new family member signs in with their own account and joins using the owner's code. Check that the intended Google account is selected and compare a known item on both devices. Browser-created calendar entries sync between web browsers; Android calendar integration follows its existing path.

For an older Android shared-login setup, verify the owner's Move my data step before switching other devices. Families still using a custom Firebase project should follow legacy setup and preserve their existing information.

Where can I find the newest version?

The Release Center lists published Android and Wall builds along with release notes. Updates should come from official Kindlane downloads.

How do I install on a Hearth display?

The dedicated Hearth walkthrough covers Advanced Settings, Developer options, wireless ADB, Bugjaeger, Native App, installation, and launching Kindlane.

Should I create a new household or connect to an existing one?

Only the first household owner creates a household. Everyone else joins with an invite code after signing in. If your family uses the older shared-login Firebase setup, continue using the same project until the data migration is completed and checked. The existing setup walkthrough explains that legacy path; do not create a second project by accident.

How can I tell whether syncing is really working?

First check that the app shows a successful connection rather than an offline or error state. Then compare a known item on two devices in the same household. A connection indicator alone does not prove both devices have the same information. Avoid uploading data from an empty device until you know which device has the correct records.

Why did a feature or theme disappear after updating?

Different APK builds may be created from different development branches. A numerically newer test build is not necessarily the newest version of every feature. Test APKs do not combine features automatically. Use the approved public Release Center for normal updates; if testing a private build, confirm its specific source branch and build notes before installing.

Will updating erase my information?

Compatible signed updates ordinarily preserve local app data, but that is not a substitute for verifying household syncing. Do not uninstall the app or clear its storage as a troubleshooting step unless you understand the impact. The Android and Wall variants can replace one another rather than install side by side.

Where is my household information stored?

Kindlane uses local device settings and Firebase-based household syncing. Support submissions go through a separate Notion form. The Privacy & Data page explains these categories and provides a route for questions or correction requests.

What should I include when reporting a problem?

Tell us what you expected, what happened instead, your device type and app version, and the steps to reproduce it. A screenshot can help, but don’t include passwords, Firebase configuration files, private account credentials, or sensitive household details. Submit a report here.

Report a problem or share an idea

New to Kindlane?
